Three from CT in National Spelling Bee
(WTNH) – The competition is underway at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, and three children from Connecticut are hoping to take home the title of the country’s best speller.
Rahul Malayappan , a seventh grader at Broadview Middle School in Danbury, is competing in his fourth National Spelling Bee. He finished tied for 33rd place in 2010.
John Paul Henares is a home-schooled eighth grader from Avon. His brother Joseph tied for third place in 2007.
Sairah Sheikh is in the fifth grade at Eli Terry Elementary School in South Windsor.
All three took part in the written test Tuesday, and correctly spelled their second and third round words Wednesday.
Rahul correctly spelled anomaly and hypocrisy.
John Paul correctly spelled azulejo and cuneiform.
Sairah correctly spelled trichinosis and belligerent.
Overall, 275 kids are taking part in the competition. The results of today’s scores, plus the written test, will determine who moves on to the semifinals Thursday morning. Only 50 spellers will make the cut.
The finals will air on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. Thursday night.
